What is MoneyTalks and why is it important?
MoneyTalks will explore how the not-for-profit sector in Eastern Europe and Central Asia can embrace business models and monetisation strategies in order to generate income and reduce dependency on big donors.
The event will bring together different types of organisations and activist groups from the region that are actively exploring new ways to adapt and use business models to diversify their funding. Examples include, but are not limited to, selling merchandise, introducing membership fees, lending resources, putting on paid events and monetising services. MoneyTalks participants will have the opportunity to discuss their experience of working with business models with colleagues and experts, and receive individual expert consultations.
Developing alternative sources of income is particularly important for civil society in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, where challenging conditions are making it necessary to find alternative approaches to funding. Developing income from local sources roots the initiative or organisation in the local community, builds trust and helps the civic initiative become more sustainable.
As the Prague Civil Society Centre increases its emphasis on this area, we are looking forward to hearing your experiences to help us shape a new programme focused on constituent engagement, funding diversification, and sustainability in general.
Who should apply to MoneyTalks?
We are looking for people who have attempted to adapt business models for the non-profit sector. How much profit you’ve made is irrelevant – experience and willingness to share is much more important.
Apply if you:
• Are from any of the countries in yellow below
• Represent a civic initiative, not business or social enterprise
• Have tried working with a business model for at least 6 months
• Would like to share your positive and negative experiences and learn from the experiences of others
• Are ready to improve your business model and put more effort into monetisation
There will be some limited space for representatives from international and expert organisations to come to MoneyTalks, meet the participants and participate in the discussion parts of the UnConference.
How will MoneyTalks work?
MoneyTalks will be participant led and only part of the agenda is determined in advance. It doesn’t matter how successful, or unsuccessful, your monitisation efforts have been. Perhaps, you are only experimenting. Everyone has some useful insight to share. All participants will be expected to present and share their experiences of monetisation and applying business models to their work. Participants will discuss the opportunities and obstacles they face in doing this as well as share their successes, failures, experiments and new ideas. Of course, you decide what to share and are free to withhold any information you consider sensitive.
All attendees will have the opportunity to consult with business experts during a consultation session. The experts and agenda will be fully tailored to the common needs and interests of the participants. There will also be opportunity to explore how some NGOs in Prague have adopted and adapted business models to meet their needs.
MoneyTalks will consist of:
• Participants’ presentations
• Workshops from business professionals
• Open slots for discussions
• Individual consultations
• Field trips to Prague organisations
